Rhythm Relays - Fruit Rhythms - World Rhythms & Instruments - Jams - Outdoor Rhythm Games - Body & Vocal Percussion
Jazzschool instructors Alan Hall and others constructively channel each child’s innate sense of rhythm into a fun and educational musical experience. In a non-threatening environment, children learn about rhythm, teamwork, respect, and music-making.
Brown Bag Lunch Suggested
Monday - Friday 9am - 12:30pm
Trades
Based on the jazz tradition of mimicking and expanding upon ideas "played to us" from another group or individual.
Rhythm Relays
Based on the relay races of track and field in which the object is to not drop the baton. In our case, it's a rhythm and the object is to pass it to the next team member without disrupting the groove. This is a rhythmic
strengthening and team building exercise.
Fruit Rhythms
We use the rhythm inherent in the native language of the students to build rhythmic phrases. Through the exploration of certain fruit words, kids learn to compose and perform fairly complex rhythms.
Traditional Rhythms
We learn how to perform the rhythms of other cultures including the Batucada of Brazil and the Bembe of Africa. In the process kids develop discipline, listening skills, and team skills.
Electronic Percussion
Through the use of electronic drum pads and sound modules, kids have the chance to develop 2, 3 and 4-way drum set independence. Focus is on rock and funk beats.
Improvisation
As rhythmic proficiency increases, all students have the opportunity to improvise over a group sustained vamp. The members of the group learn about dynamics and support and the soloist learns about overcoming fear, respecting other's ideas and "going for it".
