AUDITION INFORMATION FOR FALL 2010

Auditions for the 2010 – 11 academic year take place in late August (see dates below).
All new and returning students are required to audition for placement in all 2010 –11
performing ensembles. Please visit www.jazzschool.com/jymp for updates and more
information about audition procedures.

2010 –11 Jazzschool Studio Band Auditions
• Saturday, August 21, 2010: 10 am – 6:30 pm
• Sunday, August 22, 2010: 10 am – 6 pm
* Specific audition materials for Studio Band auditions are available
2010 –11 Advanced High School Jazz Workshop Auditions
• Sunday, August 28, 2010: 11 am – 4:30 pm
2010 –11 General Placement Auditions
• Saturday, August 28, 2010: 10 am – 6:30 pm
• Sunday, August 29, 2010: 10 am – 4:30 pm
The general placement auditions are for students interested in the following ensembles:
— Middle School Jazz Ensembles (combos)
— Advanced Middle School Jazz Workshop (combo)
— Middle School Big Band
— High School Jazz Ensembles (combos)
— Funk Ensemble
— Latin Jazz Ensemble
— High School Big Band
— Lab Band

General Placement Audition Requirements
Students should plan on performing two skill-level appropriate jazz standards, improvise
over a 12-bar blues (if the student is comfortable) or rhythm changes (for high school
students only) and sight-read. To schedule an audition, please download an application
form online. The form is a PDF document and should be filled out and saved on the applicant’s
own computer (instructions on application form). Once the form is completed
please email it to youngmusicians@jazzschool.com. After your application is received, you
will be contacted within 1-2 weeks with an audition time. Auditions are scheduled on a
first-come, first-served basis and will be scheduled at the earliest available time. Auditions will
not be scheduled on Sundays until the Saturday audition schedules have been completely
filled.
Studio Band Audition Requirements
2010-11 Studio Band audition materials will be posted online in June of 2010. Please
submit your online application form to keith@jazzschool.com. Once your application is
received, you will be contacted within 1-2 weeks with an audition time. In the body of
your email please include a brief description of your musical background. After setting up
an audition with the director, please check the website to download the required materials
for your audition. All auditions will consist of a performance of required materials, sightreading,
improvisation, and a short piece of your choice. Band members will be notified
of their acceptance by email one week after the auditions.

Advanced High School Jazz Workshop Audition Requirements
Applicants should prepare 3 selections:
— 1 up-tempo piece (“Lazy Bird” or similar)
— 1 funk/Latin/straight 8th or odd-meter piece
— 1 ballad
Please bring 3 lead sheets of each tune for adjudicators/accompanists.
Applicants will also be asked to sight-read a melody and solo on a piece to be provided
at the audition.
