Curricular Requirements: Vocal Track
A. Core Courses
Vocalists are required to take 88 of the following Core courses: 28 units of stylistically varying performance ensembles over eight semesters including: Vocal Performance (24 units); and Vocal Jazz Ensemble (4 units). 4 additional performance units may be taken as Elective courses. Additional required courses include: ear training and sight-singing (12 units); keyboard proficiency (2 units); jazz theory and improvisation (12 units); Western European harmonic practice (6 units); Western European music history (6 units); songwriting (3 units); courses in music technology (5 units); business of music (4 units); private instruction (8 units); and a senior project (2 units).
B. Elective Courses
Vocalists are required to take 15 units of Elective Courses. (See under Course Descriptions.)
C. General Education Courses
Vocalists are required to take 30 units of General Education courses. General Education Courses include: English Composition (3 units); English Literature (3 units) Social Sciences (12 units of Jazz History); Humanities (6 units); Math (3 units); and Natural Sciences (3 units) for a total of 30 units.
Vocalists are required to complete a total of 133 units to graduate. (See Curriculum Requirements Template — Vocal Trac belowk.)
Independent Study
Students with junior standing may apply up to 4 Elective units to Independent Study. Independent Study affords students an opportunity to undertake special projects above and beyond the parameters of the curriculum. Students interested in pursuing independentstudy are required to submit a proposal in writing to the Dean of Instruction outlining project scope, objectives, time frame for completion, and their preferred faculty advisor. Upon approval, students are required sign a contract with their advisor agreeing to complete the project. A letter grade is issued based upon completion of projected objectives within the proposed timeframe.
