Instrumental Performance Ensemble
The instrumental performance ensemble focuses
on a broad range of jazz, big band, Afro-
Caribbean, Brazilian and world music repertoire.
Students are encouraged to bring in original compositions
and arrangements. Ensembles are invited to
perform at numerous venues and festivals throughout
the Bay Area including Yoshi’s Jazz Club.

Jazz String Chamber Ensemble I

A four-semester performance class focusing on
the art of playing jazz and improvisatory music
on violins, violas, cellos and double basses.
Repertoire includes material written and arranged
by top composers in the jazz string
world including Turtle Island Quartet, Darol
Anger, Jean-Luc Ponty, Edgar Meyer and Evan
Price. Latin, fiddle music, classical, pop and
rock ‘n’ roll genres are also covered.

An instrumental ensemble focusing on the rich
system of traditional North Indian music.
This course covers the fundamental theoretical
underpinnings of Indian melody, rhythm and
improvisation through analysis and performance
of traditional Indian compositions.

Practical Applications for the Rhythm Section
Elective — 2 units
A two-semester hands-on, interactive course for
pianists/guitarists, bassists and drummers focusing
on rhythmic considerations relevant to the
rhythm section. Course covers both the role of
the individual and the rhythm section as a unit as
applied to jazz, Afro-Caribbean, South American
and World music styles and includes feel, reading,
ear training, and transcription and analysis.

Advanced Afro-Latin Percussion Ensemble
Elective — 2 units
The history and performance of traditional, popular
and contemporary Latin American repertoire.
Covers techniques and roles of over a dozen different
instruments including tumbadoras (conga
drums), bongos, timbales, tambora, cajón, pandereta,
claves, cowbell, maracas, güiro, quijada,
güícharo, chékere, and güira. Rhythms and styles
addressed include Bembé, Iyesá, Palo, Makuta,
Abakuá, Arará, Yambú, Columbia, Guaguancó,
Conga de Comparsa Habanera, Conga de Comparsa
Santiaguera, Bomba, Plena, Merengue,
Samba, Landó, Son, Danzón, Mambo, Salsa,
Timba, and Cumbia. Prerequisites: advanced
hand and stick technique and coordination,
and the ability to read basic rhythmic notation.

Saxophone Quartet
Elective — 2 units
The traditional SATB configuration for soprano,
alto, tenor and baritone saxophones. Repertoire
covers styles from Baroque to bebop and beyond
and addresses technical aspects relevant and
unique to a woodwind quartet.
