Instrumental Curriculum
Instrumental students take stylistically varying performance ensembles over eight semesters at the Jazzschool Institute. Additional required courses include jazz theory and improvisation, ear training and sight-singing, jazz history, Western European harmonic practice and history, counterpoint, composition, arranging, world music and the music of Latin America, piano and jazz piano for non-pianists, private instruction, courses in music technology, business of music, and a senior project. Pianists are required to take 14 units and non-pianists are required to take 16 units of upper-division elective courses. Students are required to take 30 General Education units, including 12 units of jazz history from pre-1900 to the present. Instrumental students must complete 130 units to graduate. Vocal Curriculum
Vocal students take stylistically varying vocal jazz performance classes over eight semesters at the Jazzschool Institute. Additional required courses include jazz theory and improvisation, ear training and sight singing, jazz history, Western European harmonic practice and history, counterpoint, composition, arranging, history of jazz singers, piano and jazz piano for non-pianists, private instruction, courses in music technology, business of music, and a senior project. 14 units of elective courses are required. Students are required to take 30 General Education units including 12 units of jazz history from pre-1900 to the present. Vocal students must complete 138 units to graduate.
