The history of jazz is strewn with brilliant players who have inexplicably eluded widespread recognition, flying under the radar of labels, journalists, and fans. But guitarist David Haskell’s stealth status over the past two decades is less mysterious; he’s spent most of that time as a commercial pilot. Before Haskell took to the air, he was a widely respected improviser at the center of the San Francisco jazz scene, a versatile, blues-drenched player often heard as a sideman and bandleader at high profile venues like Keystone Korner. A phenomenal but short-lived all-star Latin jazz big band from the Late 70s, Esencia has reformed in support of a recently re-discovered recording (Esencia, now available as part of the Bay Area Jazz Archives Series on Jazzschool Records). Featuring Mary Fettig, flute, sax; Tim Acosta, Tammy Ellis, Richard Theurer, trumpet; Al Bent, Doug Beavers, trombone; Jorge Ellington, vocals; Mark Levine, piano; David Belove, bass; Paul van Wageningen, drums; Danilo País, percussion; and Omar Ledezma, vocals, percussion.
