This summer the Jazzschool Vocal Department offers a series of classes focusing on repertoire building, examining the representative work of an eclectic array of composers relevant to the vocal jazz genre. Vocalists expand their repertoire learning the unique styles of composers including Harold Arlen, Duke Ellington, Tom Waits, Rodgers & Hart, the Beatles, Burt Bacharach and beyond. Each class covers the composer’s life, lyrics and definitive recordings. Students are given ten or more new songs and will perform a selection of them in class with an accompanist during the last 3 weeks of class. Vocalists are encouraged to enroll in several of these concentrated courses to dramatically broaden their repertoire and extend their knowledge of style!

Please note: Recommended staples in conjunction with these new repertoirebuilding classes include Singer’s Toolbox, designed to help develop musicianship skills, and the self-explanatory Get Your Charts Together. Singers may also enroll in one or more of the core vocal classes including Improvisation 101, The Creative Jazz Singer and Vocal Technique to round out their summer curriculum. We look forward to seeing you in class!
