Blues Vocal Funshop
Find the freedom and knowledge to sing the blues in this fun, joyous and supportive group class. Students learn to identify various blues forms, discover the secrets of how to sit in with a band anywhere and release their inner hambone. Students listen to and analyze various blues forms from early American to New Orleans, Chicago and Texas blues styles. Gospel, country, jazz and rock n' roll are also covered. Classes are accompanied by guitar. Maximum class size: 6.

Vocal Jazz Performance (BEG)
A class for the beginning to intermediate jazz singer. Drawing from the "Great American Songbook" and other important standard jazz and blues repertoire, students learn original melodies and lyrics, incorporating embellishment, phrasing and improvisation characteristic of gospel, blues, and jazz styles as time permits. Students learn about the lives and music of the great composers and vocal legends of popular music. Expect to sing, sing, sing both in unison and individually with the Margie Baker Trio! Maximum enrollment: 10.

The Soulful Side of Jazz
Vocalists develop a repertoire of songs from the pop, blues and jazz genres with a soul-oriented approach. Students interpret the great popular music of the day from Lou Rawls to Luther Vandross to Anita Baker and more. In addition, students focus on presentation and stage presence. Maximum enrollment: 8.

The Art of Jazz Singing (INT/ADV)
There are many definitions of a "jazz singer"; from scat masters like Ella Fitzgerald to outside improvisers like Betty Carter; from balladeers like Andy Bey to contemporary stylists like Patricia Barber. What is your approach and how can you broaden your horizons? This class is for vocalists who have experience singing jazz and want to further deepen their style, repertoire, improvisational skills and expert ise with a rhythm section. A pianist, bassist and drummer accompany singers. Come develop your strengths and strengthen your weaknesses in this challenging, supportive environment. Maximum enrollment: 6 students.
Prerequisite: four songs of various styles memorized, with corresponding charts. Telephone consultation required.

The Creative Jazz Singer
This performance class focuses on all aspects of jazz singing including building a repertoire, communicating with the rhythm section, phrasing, interpretation, improvisation, developing an authentic vocal sound and style, and microphone and performance techniques. Full rhythm section accompaniment provided. Maximum enrollment: 6 students

Musician, Singer, Artist, Storyteller (INT/ADV)
What is that inexpressible quality that makes you listen in rapt attention to one singer while others, perhaps with better voices, leave you flat? Charisma, confidence, and commitment are all part of a wide range of performance skills that can be developed and practiced. Finding your own story and learning how to tell it in song is the focus of this class. Each student presents several songs to the group in this mutually supportive environment. Participants perform in-class with video feedback, culminating with a performance in the end of quarter Jazzschool student performance series. Maximum class size: 6 students.

Vocal Jazz Ensemble I
A class devoted to the study and performance of jazz harmony. Repertoire includes original arrangements, incorporating fresh harmonizations of familiar pop and jazz tunes. Each singer is individually mic'd.
Prerequisite: enrollment based on a parts- available basis only. Audition required.

The Improvisational Singer
A class focused on developing an improvisational relationship between the singer and the rhythm section. Vocalists learn how to direct the group and create arrangements on the spot, listen and respond to the instrumentalists and step outside of the box on standard material as well as writing original songs and lyrics. Rhythm section accompaniment provided. Maximum enrollment: 6 vocalists.

The Art of the Duo
The intimate setting of the duo is one of the most common "working" formats in jazz. Pianist Dan Zemelman and Jazzschool Vocal Director Laurie Antonioli team up to teach this int/adv class for both vocalists and pianists focusing on the technical and creative aspects unique to playing in a duo setting. Students have an opportunity to play with each teacher as well as with each other exploring repertoire, arrangements and communication needed to create an artistic and dynamic performance. Maximum enrollment: 5 pianists and 5 vocalists.
