Mambo 101: Dance Grooves from Cuba to New York

Rita Hargrave, dancer, writer and founder of www.salsaroots.com, a salsa history website, presents a multimedia workshop on the Afro-Cuban and African-American dance styles that are the foundation of contemporary salsa dancing. The course includes:

  • rare music and dance footage of Cuban dance styles such as son, cha cha cha and mambo and Lindy Hop
  • an African-American dance form; a live Rumba demonstration by a local Cuban dance master, and
  • a dance lesson for participants that covers exercises to increase upper body and hip motion, timing, rhythm and improvisational footwork.

Whether you have never danced or are a veteran who wants to add soul and spice to your moves, this is the class for you. Bring your dance shoes. Prerequisites: None.
